Abstract: To escape poverty, individuals must enhance their capabilities through education and self-reliance while fully participating in and benefiting from social progress. These two strategies complement each other, providing a robust foundation for personal and societal prosperity.

1. Self-Reliance for the Poor: Finding Hope Through Personal Growth
The essence of poverty lies in the lack of prospects. However, anyone with skills and the ability to identify their comparative advantage can improve their lives through cooperation and division of labour, even if their absolute capabilities are lower. The key lies in continuous education and investing in human capital.
Thomas Sowell, in Ethnic America: A History, highlights significant disparities in economic achievements among ethnic groups. Communities like Jewish and Asian populations have exceeded average income levels in the United States by prioritising education and hard work. Their success is rooted not in political power but in long-term self-improvement and educational investment. This underscores the direction for the poor: lifelong learning and building personal value.
2. Leveraging Social Progress: Riding the Wave of Development
Social advancement offers the poor opportunities to improve their lives. History shows that despite resource constraints, technology and innovation have consistently enhanced human living conditions. From the steam engine to modern healthcare innovations, each technological breakthrough has delivered widespread benefits. For instance, the percentage of people living in extreme poverty globally dropped from 25% in 1970 to less than 5% today.
Economists have observed that social progress is narrowing disparities in education, life expectancy, and consumption. Both the wealthy and the poor are enjoying the fruits of modern living, such as international shipping, advanced medical care, and global travel. A growing economic "pie" ensures that everyone gains a share of societal progress.

3. The Wealthiest Poor: Material Abundance Through Social Growth
An article in The Wall Street Journal once described America’s "wealthiest poor." Even many low-income families today own multiple cars, televisions, air conditioning, and microwaves. The children of impoverished families now enjoy better nutrition and health, surpassing the average physique of soldiers during World War II.
This demonstrates that even the poorest can experience material improvements when society progresses and wealth expands. Economists have estimated that inventors and entrepreneurs retain only around 2% of the total value their innovations bring to society. This means that the vast majority of benefits from technological advancements are distributed across society, including to the poorest individuals.
Conclusion:For the poor, the path to prosperity lies in self-reliance through education and leveraging the benefits of societal advancements. Together, these strategies foster both personal and collective progress, ensuring that everyone has the chance to thrive.
